2008 Fun race results

The weather could not have been better for our end of season event; a sunny and warm autumn day with a SW wind ranging between 8 and 12 Knots.

There were 7 boats on the start line under the Orwell Bridge.
Of these 6 participated in the race, the 7th boat, Joint Endeavor with Tim Long, could only join us for the first half of the course.

With conditions the way they were it turned out to be a very close race.

The photograph shows Perignon, which led the field most of the way, as she is being finally overtaken by Happy Dayz (Wieland wrote this !!) near Pin Mill, 3 miles from the finish line.

Here are the results:

1. Happy Dayz 2 hours 27 minutes
2. Andromeda 2 hours 30 minutes
3. Perignon 2 hours 31 minutes
4. Miss Behavin 2 hours 32 minutes (incl. 1.5 minutes of engine use close to the finish line)
5. Nordic Spirit 2 hours 33 minutes
6. Silver Dawn 4 hours 10 minutes - we think they stopped for lunch!!

Looking forward to the sailing season 09

Change of Date to Wet Dock Lock Closure

Mariners and Port Users are advised that due to the fitting of new floodgates, the Wet Dock Lock will be closed to all marine traffic between 0600 hrs Monday 24th November to 1800 hrs Friday 28th November 2008.
The road bridge over the Wet Dock will be closed on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th November during the installation of the floodgates.
These times are reliant on the new floodgates arriving by barge from Holland and the work proceeding without any unexpected hold-ups. Should there be any major delays, and subject to the agreement with the Contractors, there will be some restricted openings of the lock outside of the advertised closure times.
The lock may be back in operation before 1800 hrs on Friday 28th, please contact the Lock Master on 01473 – 213526 or on VHF 68 for details of when the lock is re-opening, or for any information on extended delays.

Local Notice to Mariners No10 2008 Advanced warning of Lock Gate Closures is cancelled

Ipswich Haven Yacht Club
About Ipswich Haven Yacht Club

The club was initially formed as a berth holders association in January 2006 but it was quickly established that the majority of members and potential member's preference was for a Yacht Club. The name was changed to Ipswich Haven Yacht Club mid way through 2006.
We currently have 65 member boats with a good mix of sailing and motor boats.

We have had good sailing and social programmes having visited Haven Ports, Walton and Frinton and Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Clubs last Season.

Marconi Sailing, St Edmundsbury, The Old Gaffers Association and Shotley Point Yacht Clubs visited our 'works in progress' Clubhouse during the 2007 season.

We aim to have more cruises and more adventurous trips in 2008 and the Clubhouse which is now largely complete will host more social events and hopefully more visiting Yachtspersons.

We enjoy a good relationship with Ipswich Haven Marina and they have been very helpful in the establishment of the Clubhouse which will be fully opened at Easter when we are expecting several clubs to visit us.

We are looking to become affiliated to the RYA when funds allow and would like to play our full part in developing the recreation of boating in the area.

Advice from HHA

1. Keep out of the pilotage areas.

2. Keep well south after leaving/before joining the recommended yacht track.

3. Monitor channel 14 and also ch 09 which will be useful to find out ship intensions in the area.

Core Sampling New Cut Ipswich Docks

Mariners and Port Users are advised that a small jack-up barge 12mx10m with a safety boat in attendance will be working in the New Cut and to the west of Blackwall Bight light buoy.
The jack-up barge will be on site Monday 11th August 2008 working at several locations taking core samples over a period of approximately 16 weeks.
The jack-up will not restrict the navigation of commercial traffic using the East Bank or West Bank Berths.
It will cause at times a restriction in the navigation channel for leisure vessels using the New Cut. The channel will remain partly open for the passage of these vessels to and from their berths. Boat owners are advised to contact ONS for information regarding the position of the jack-up and details of the safety boat, which will be maintaining radio watch on VHF 68.
In all cases vessels must navigate with caution when passing the jack-up and keep well clear when it is being moved from one location to another by a tug and the workboat.

Impeding Safe Navigation to Large Vessels

Mariners and Port Users involved with small craft and recreational activities are reminded that they must not obstruct or impede the movement of large vessels using the navigable channel or the approaches to a vessels berth.
Small craft must always take early action to move out of the navigation channel when a large commercial vessel is approaching.
A warning of the large vessels position may be given by one prolonged blast.
The view from loaded container vessels and other large vessels is restricted in the area immediately in front of the vessel. If you cannot see the bridge of a commercial vessel then it is unlikely the lookout will be able to see you from the bridge of the vessel.
It is this loss of visibility that when in close proximity to a large vessel you should not attempt to cross under a vessels bow. This is important in all situations including racing situations where any breakdown or difficulty your vessel encounters may go unnoticed on the larger vessel. Race organizers are requested to inform anyone taking part in an event of the dangers crossing ahead in a close quarters situation.
